How much does a QR code cost? Free, static and dynamic prices compared

A static QR code is free forever. A dynamic one is a subscription, usually $5 to $25 a month to start. Here is what you pay, and the hidden costs to check.

The short answer: a static QR code is free, and a dynamic QR code is a subscription. Among well known tools, the entry plan for dynamic codes costs about $5 to $25 a month in October 2026, and higher plans add more codes, landing pages, team seats and analytics.

The longer answer is that the monthly price is rarely the whole cost. This guide explains what you are paying for, where the hidden costs are, and how a few popular tools compare.

What does a static QR code cost?

Nothing. A static code stores its content, such as a web address or a WiFi password, directly in the pattern. Any free generator can make one, there is no account behind it, and it never expires.

The catch is that a static code can never change. If the web address moves or has a typo, the only fix is a new code and a reprint. It also cannot count scans, because nothing sits between the scan and the destination. Our guide to static vs dynamic QR codes covers when each one makes sense.

Why does a dynamic QR code cost money?

A dynamic code stores a short link instead of the destination. When someone scans, the service behind that link sends them on to wherever you pointed the code and records the scan. That is what lets you change the destination after printing and see who scans, when and where.

Running that link costs the service money on every scan, which is why dynamic codes are sold as subscriptions. The subscription is also what keeps the code alive: when it ends, many services stop redirecting. More on that below.

What are the hidden costs of a QR code?

These are the ones people find out about after printing:

  • Scan caps. Some plans stop a code, or stop counting it, after a set number of scans. A popular poster is exactly the code that hits the cap.
  • Codes that stop after a trial. A code made during a free trial often stops redirecting when the trial ends. If it is already on a thousand flyers, the real cost is the reprint. We wrote a whole guide on what happens when a free trial ends.
  • Per code limits. Plans include a set number of dynamic codes. One code per placement (menu, window, receipt) is how you learn which one works, so a small allowance fills up fast.
  • Branding. Lower plans may add the service's logo or name to the code, a footer on landing pages, or an ad or preview page before your content.
  • Yearly billing. Many headline prices are "per month, billed yearly". The real first payment is twelve times the number on the page.
  • Short analytics history. Entry plans often keep only weeks or months of scan data.
  • What happens when you stop paying. Some services keep codes working, some pause them, some switch them off. This matters more than any feature, because printed codes outlive most plans.

We read each company's own pricing and help pages to compare their entry plan for dynamic codes. Prices checked October 2026, in US dollars. "Billed yearly" means the monthly figure is paid as one yearly charge.

A few honest notes on that table:

  • QR TIGER gives you more for less to start. 12 dynamic codes for $7, billed month to month, is a better entry deal than our Basic plan (3 codes, yearly only). Our first monthly plan is Core at $12.
  • Scanova's Basic plan matches ours on price and code count, also with unlimited scans.
  • Bitly and Flowcode keep codes scanning after you cancel, according to their help pages. That is kinder to printed codes than a pause, ours included.
  • QR.io has no code limit at all: its single plan is $39.99 a month, with unlimited codes and scans.
  • Uniqode's entry plan includes 15 codes, more than our Basic plan, but caps scans per year.

What does KuikCode cost?

Applies after beta. During beta every feature is unlocked, nothing pauses and nothing is charged.

KuikCode has four plans and no free plan. Every plan has unlimited scans, and every workspace starts with a 14-day trial with no card.

PlanBilled yearlyBilled monthlyDynamic KuikCodes
Basic$5/mo ($60/yr)Yearly only3
Core$9/mo$12/mo20
PRO$29/mo$39/mo150
Business$99/mo$129/mo600

What to know before you pick one:

  • Basic is for a few codes that must keep working. It includes the full design editor and every destination type, with 90 days of scan history. It has no monthly option.
  • Core adds room to grow: 20 codes, a hosted site and a year of scan history, billed monthly or yearly.
  • Branding comes off at PRO. On Basic and Core, a small KUIKCODE word sits in one corner square of the code, and KuikPages carry a "Made with KuikCode" footer. PRO removes both and adds full scan history, multi page KuikPages and smart rules.
  • Business is for teams that need 600 codes, scheduled reports, scan webhooks and GS1 Digital Link codes for packaging.
  • If a plan ends, the workspace pauses. Codes show a neutral "temporarily unavailable" page until you choose a plan, and everything is kept for 60 days. That is the trade off of no free plan, and we explain it fully in what happens when a free trial ends.

How do I work out what one QR code really costs?

Take the yearly price and divide it by the number of codes you will actually print, not the number the plan allows.

For example, at KuikCode prices billed yearly:

  • Basic: $60 a year for 3 codes is $20 per code per year.
  • Core: $108 a year for 20 codes is $5.40 per code.
  • PRO: $348 a year for 150 codes is about $2.32 per code.

If you only need one or two codes, a cheap entry plan wins. If you run a code per placement across many campaigns, a bigger plan is often cheaper per code. Then add the cost you cannot see on the pricing page: a reprint if the code ever stops working.

Which kind of QR code should I pay for?

  • One code for something that will never change, such as your WiFi or a permanent homepage: a free static code is enough.
  • Anything printed in volume, such as packaging, menus, signs or direct mail: pay for dynamic codes, with no scan cap, on a plan you will keep.
  • A campaign you want to measure: dynamic codes with one code per placement, so you can see which one works. Our guide to tracking QR code scans shows what to look at.

Frequently asked questions

01How much does a QR code cost?+

A static QR code is free. A dynamic QR code, the kind you can edit and track, is sold as a subscription. Among well known tools, entry plans cost about $5 to $25 a month (prices checked October 2026), with more codes and features on higher plans.

02Are free QR codes really free?+

Static codes are. They store their content in the pattern, so nothing can expire or be switched off. Free dynamic codes usually come with limits, such as a scan cap, ads shown to scanners, or a trial that ends.

03Why do dynamic QR codes need a subscription?+

A dynamic code points to a short link that the service runs for you. Every scan goes through its servers, which redirect to your destination and record the scan. The subscription pays for keeping that link running.

04Is there a one-time payment option for a dynamic QR code?+

A few tools sell one, usually for a single code. Most sell subscriptions, because the short link behind the code has to keep running for as long as the code is printed.

05How much does KuikCode cost?+

Basic is $5 a month billed yearly ($60 a year) for 3 dynamic KuikCodes. Core is $9 a month yearly or $12 monthly for 20, PRO is $29 yearly or $39 monthly for 150, and Business is $99 yearly or $129 monthly for 600. Every plan has unlimited scans, and every workspace starts with a 14-day trial with no card.

06What is the cheapest way to get a QR code that keeps working?+

If the destination will never change, a free static code. If it might change, or you want to count scans, pick a dynamic plan with no scan cap and read what happens to printed codes if the plan ends.
