QR code glossary

The words you meet when you make, design and track QR codes, explained in plain language.

Terms

Destination
What a QR code opens when scanned: a website, a PDF, an image, a contact card, an event, a map location, a phone call, a mobile page or a hosted site. QR code types
Dynamic QR code
A QR code that stores a short link instead of its final content. The service behind the link decides where each scan goes, so the destination can change after printing and every scan can be counted. What is a dynamic QR code
Error correction
Extra data built into every QR code that lets it be read even when part of it is covered or damaged, roughly 7 to 30 percent depending on the level. It is what makes a logo in the middle possible.
Finder patterns (eyes)
The three large squares in the corners of a QR code. They let a camera find the code and work out which way up it is. Design editors often call them eyes and let you change their shape and color.
GTIN
Global Trade Item Number, the product number behind a retail barcode. GTINs are licensed through GS1 and form the core of a GS1 Digital Link. Application Identifiers
Hosted site
A static website uploaded to KuikCode as a ZIP file and served on a kuik.page address, so a QR code can open a site you built elsewhere. Hosted sites
KuikPage
A mobile page built in KuikCode from templates and blocks, published on a kuik.page address and usually opened by a KuikCode. A KuikPage can have several pages with a menu. KuikPages
Mobile landing page
A short, phone sized web page built for one purpose, such as a menu, an event or a product. It is often what a QR code opens instead of a full website. What is a mobile landing page
Module
One of the small dark or light squares that make up a QR code. Design editors can draw modules as dots, rounded squares or other shapes, as long as the code still scans.
QR code
A square, two dimensional barcode that phone cameras can read. QR stands for Quick Response. It was created in 1994 by Denso Wave to track car parts and is now used for menus, packaging, payments and signs. What QR code stands for
QR code frame
A border around a QR code, often with a call to action such as Scan for the menu. Frames make a code easier to notice and explain why someone should scan. Designed QR codes
Quiet zone
The empty margin around a QR code. It separates the code from its surroundings so the camera can find its edges. Frames and designs should keep it clear.
Retargeting pixel
A small script from an ad platform, such as the Meta Pixel or a Google Ads tag, that lets you show ads later to people who scanned. It should only run with the visitor's consent where the law requires it.
Scan analytics
The record of every scan of a dynamic code, such as the time, city, country, device and language. It shows which placements work and when people scan. How to track QR code scans
Scannability
How reliably a QR code can be read by phone cameras. Contrast, size, the quiet zone and how heavily the code is styled all affect it. KuikCode checks every design before you download it.
Smart rules
Conditions that send one QR code to different destinations, for example by device, country, language or time of day. Also called redirect rules or smart routing.
Static QR code
A QR code whose content is written directly into the pattern. It never expires and needs no service, but it can never be edited or tracked after printing. Static vs dynamic QR codes
Sunrise 2027
The GS1 industry goal for retailers to accept 2D barcodes such as QR codes at the point of sale by the end of 2027. It is an ambition, not a legal deadline. Sunrise 2027 guide
SVG
A vector image format. An SVG QR code stays sharp at any size, which makes it the best choice for print. PNG and JPG are raster formats suited to screens and documents.
Unique scans
An estimate of how many different people scanned a code, as opposed to total scans. It is usually worked out from anonymous signals without storing personal data.
UTM parameters
Tags added to a web address, such as utm_source and utm_campaign, that tell analytics tools like Google Analytics where a visit came from. A QR code can add them automatically.
vCard
A standard format for contact details. A vCard QR code opens a contact card on the phone with a button that saves the name, phone, email and more to the address book. QR code on a business card
WiFi QR code
A static QR code that stores a network name, security type and password so a phone can join the network with one scan. A new password needs a new code. How to make a WiFi QR code
